Preventing False Alarms with Your Security System

If you are the owner of one of the New Jersey security systems out there, or you are considering getting one, you may have concerns when it comes to false alarms. A false alarm can be a hassle for home owners and the truth is, they cost time and resources for the security company. On top of that, if they happen often, the homeowner may start to simply ignore them and when a real emergency occurs, they may not realize it. Fortunately there are some things that you can do in order to eliminate the chance of false alarms in New Jersey security systems.

Preventing and Eliminating False Alarms

The first thing you will have to do in order to eliminate and prevent a false alarm is to read and review the manual that came with your alarm system. You should also make sure that everyone in your family knows the password for your system, as sometimes when the alarm goes off, your security company will call. This way, when asked for the password, any family member can get the alarm turned off and alert the company that all is well.

Other Checks that You Can Do

Another thing that should be done is to check any switches by the windows or doors. These contact switches, which could be lose, could be causing false alarms. Even a strong wind could be causing them to move. Speaking of wind, if you have motion detectors, you should make sure you are not putting them near any vents, fans or near a fireplace. These drafts could trigger the alarm as well.

If you have pets, you will likely get false alarms thanks to your furry friends. Make sure to tell your security company about pets and they will likely be able to adjust your system accordingly. If you know your pet has set off the alarm, contact your security company immediately.

Finally, you will want to check the batteries in your system. Some parts of your system may be powered by batteries and if they are, you will want to make sure the batteries are not going bad. This could also cause your system to malfunction. If you have done all of these things and your system is still malfunctioning, it may be a good idea to contact your security company for more information.
